The historic site was once the Cascades Female Factory, a euphemism for a horribly overcrowded colonial prison. You can walk on your own through the memorial garden and the prison site or take a one-hour guided tour.
Tours of the Female Factory Historic Site and Matron's Cottage are conducted at 0930 Monday to Friday during the Winter months and 0930 and 1400 during the Summer months. Large groups are catered for at pre-arranged times.
